The DSP Job Description

What is Supported Living?

Some people need help in order to live full lives. They need personal, intensive support to reach their maximum potential. That can mean very different things depending on the person. This is a varied and interesting job, and is not “just caregiving” although that is part of it.

 

What is the job?

As we said above, it’s a lot of things. There is usually, but not always, a strong care giving component. People with intellectual challenges may need help keeping themselves clean, fed, and healthy. There may be the need to understand medical issues. All our fully trained staff are qualified to give medications under the direction of a delegating RN.

Just as important however is the ability to improve independence. Staff can also be life coaches, instructors, advisors. Learning is something everyone needs, but it can take a little more effort and patience when it comes to our clients.

Being out in the community participating in life as much as possible  is a major part of what we do. There are often hikes and picnics, dances, parties, and more.

​

This is not a traveling job or a visiting nurse type of job. Staff work for entire shifts, although they may sometimes move from one client to another.

Shifts in Mount Vernon are

7AM to 3PM

3PM to 11PM

11PM to 7AM

Shifts in Stanwood are

6:30AM to 2:30PM

2:30PM to 10:30PM

10:30PM to 6:30AM

What are the requirements?

* You must have a valid driver's license.

*You must be at least 18 years old and have a high school degree or G.E.D.

* You must be able to pass state and federal background checks…. This means you have no disqualifying convictions.

* You must be able to do the work physically, which may involve lifting or supporting clients with gait problems.

* You must be a caring person that is willing to support others unconditionally.

* Training requires a flexible schedule and will include mornings and off-site classroom training.

 

What are the benefits?

Paid training. All the training needed to become a DSP, a title recognized all over the state.

Sick and vacation pay accrual. One “floating holiday” per year.

Pay is $21.93 hourly to start. Periodic raises. Sleep-over shifts are paid at minimum wage unless actually needed.
